Salty Dog

1 1/2    oz.        Vodka

                        Grapefruit Juice (to fill)

 

Salt the rim of a highball glass, and fill with ice.  Pour in the vodka and juice, stir well, and serve.

 

Tips:  For added taste, use a lime wedge to moisten the rim of the glass for salting, as shown here.

 

 

Sangria

Category: Wine Drinks

 

3          oz.        Red or White Wine

1/4       oz.        Brandy

1          tbsp.     Triple Sec

                        Orange Juice (to fill)

                        Orange Slice

 

Pour into a large wine glass or brandy snifter, garnish with the fruit and serve.

 

Tips:  Make a pitcherful and let it sit overnight with fruit slices floating in the liquid, for even more fun and flavor.  For the sweeter style of Sangria popular in Mexican restaurant chains, add sugar syrup to taste.

 

 

Scorpion

Category: Tropical Drinks

 

2          oz.        White Rum

1          oz.        Brandy

1/2       oz.        Triple Sec or

                              Creme de Noyeaux

1 1/2    oz.        Orange Juice

3/4       oz.        Lemon Juice

                        Orange Slice

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Stick the fruit together with a toothpick.  Then blend the drink ingredients together with ice and pour into a highball glass.  Garnish with the fruit and serve.

 

 

Scotch & Soda

Category: Basic Cocktails

 

1 1/2    oz.        Scotch

3          oz.        Soda Water

 

Pour into an ice-filled highball glass, stir to chill, and serve.

 

Tips:  This drink is often taken without ice, so if you're pouring for someone else, make sure to find out if they want it "neat" or "on the rocks".

 

 

Scotch Sour

Category: Basic Cocktails

 

1 1/2    oz.        Scotch

3          oz.        Sour Mix

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with the cherry and serve.

 

 

Screwdriver

Category: Basic Cocktails

 

1 1/2    oz.        Vodka

                        Orange Juice (to fill)

 

Pour the vodka into an ice-filled highball glass.  Fill with orange juice and stir before serving.

 

Variations:  Any other white good, such as rum or gin, may be substituted for the vodka.  Or add a splash of Galliano to create a Harvey Wallbanger (see recipe).

 

Trivia:  According to bar lore, the screwdriver was named by the Texas oil rig workers who invented the drink, and used their tools as impromptu swizzle sticks.

 

 

Seven & Seven

Category: Highballs

 

1 1/2    oz.        Seagram's 7 Crown Whiskey

                        7-Up (to fill)

 

Pour the whiskey into an ice-filled highball glass.  Top off with 7-Up and serve.

 

Variations:  While Seagram's is the traditional liquor for this popular drink, any blended whiskey can be used.  Common garnishes include an orange slice and cherry or a lemon twist.

 

 

Sevilla

Category: Manhattan Variations

 

1          oz.        Dark Rum

1          oz.        Sweet Vermouth

1          dash     Bitters

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Shake or blend with ice and pour into a chilled martini glass.  Garnish with the cherry and serve.

 

 

Seville

1 1/2    oz.        Gin

1/2       oz.        Sherry

1/2       oz.        Lemon Juice

1/2       oz.        Orange Juice

1/2       oz.        Sugar Syrup

 

Shake or blend with ice, and strain into a chilled rocks glass.

 

 

Sex on the Beach

3/4       oz.        Vodka

3/4       oz.        Peach Schnapps

2          oz.        Grapefruit or Pineapple Juice

2          oz.        Cranberry Juice

 

Pour the liquors into an ice-filled highball glass.  Top off with juices and stir before serving.

 

 

Shandy

Category: Coolers

 

                        Beer

                        7-Up (to fill)

 

Pour beer into mug until it's 3/4 full.  Top off with the 7-Up and serve.

 

Trivia:  Shandy is a popular drink in England, where young adults and light drinkers enjoy it in pubs.  If you order one there, don't be surprised if the barkeep refers to 7-Up as "lemonade".

 

 

Shirley Temple

Category: Non-alcoholic Drinks

 

1/4       oz.        Grenadine

                        Ginger Ale

 

Who doesn't remember how adult they felt when their parents allowed them to order this cocktail for the first time?  Pour the grenadine into an ice-filled collins or rocks glass, top off with ginger ale and garnish with the cherry before serving.

 

Variations:  Substitute cola for the ginger ale to pour a Roy Rogers.  7-Up works well, too.

 

 

Sidecar

1 1/2    oz.        Brandy

3/4       oz.        Triple Sec

3/4       oz.        Sour Mix

 

Shake or blend with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

 

Variations:  Loosely defined, a Sidecar is any drink that combines liquor and liqueur in a 2-to-1 ratio, with a splash of sour mix thrown in for good measure.  Recognized variations include substituting bourbon, gin, scotch or applejack for the brandy to pour a Bourbon, Gin, Scotch or Apple Sidecar.

 

 

Singapore Sling

Category: Tropical Drinks

 

1 1/2    oz.        Gin

1          oz.        Cherry Brandy

1/2       oz.        Lemon Juice

                        Club Soda (to fill)

1          dash     Cointreau

                        Lemon Slice

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Stick the lemon and cherry together with a toothpick.  Then shake the gin, brandy, and sour mix together, and strain into an ice-filled collins glass.  Fill with club soda, top with the Cointreau, and garnish with the fruit to serve.

 

Tips:  No cherry brandy on hand?  Substitute 1 oz. of sloe gin or 1/2 oz. of grenadine instead.  Some bartenders also prefer to use sour mix instead of lemon juice.

 

Trivia:  The Singapore Sling was invented at the famous Writer's Bar at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore.  Joseph Conrd and Rudyard Kipling were among the many famous colonial-period authors who downed a drink or two there under the breeze of a slowly-turning ceiling fan.

 

 

Sloe Gin Fizz

Category: Fizzes

 

1          oz.        Sloe Gin

2          oz.        Sour Mix

                        Club Soda (to fill)

                        Lemon Slice

 

Stick the fruit together with a toothpick.  Shake or blend the sloe gin and sour mix with ice, and strain into a tall collins glass.  Fill with club soda, and garnish with the lemon before serving.

 

Tips:  Use a blender to produce the frothiest (and showiest) drink.

 

 

Sloe Screw

1          oz.        Vodka

1          oz.        Sloe Gin

                        Orange Juice (to fill)

                        Orange Slice

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Fill a highball glass with ice, and stick the fruit together with a toothpick.  Add the vodka and sloe gin, then fill with orange juice.  Garnish with the fruit before serving.

 

Variations:  Substitute Southern Comfort for the vodka to create the drink with the name we'd rather leave to your imagination.

 

 

Sloe Sunset

1 1/2    oz.        White Rum

3/4       oz.        Sloe Gin

                        Orange Juice (to fill)

 

Fill a highball glass with ice, then pour in the rum and sloe gin.  Add orange juice to fill and serve.

 

Variations:  Substitute tequila for rum to pour a Sloe Sunrise.

 

 

Snowflake

1 1/2    oz.        Gin

1 1/2    oz.        Peppermint Schnapps

 

Fill a wineglass with crushed ice, then pour in the liquors.  Stir until chilled and serve.

 

 

Sombrero

Category: Cream Drinks

 

1 1/2    oz.        Coffee Liqueur

1          oz.        Half & Half

 

Fill an old-fashioned glass with ice cubes, pour in the liqueur, and give it a couple of stirs.  Float the cream on top of the liqueur by pouring it slowly over the back of a spoon that's held with its tip just touching the drink's surface.

 

 

Soul Kiss

1          oz.        Whiskey

1          oz.        Dry Vermouth

1/2       oz.        Dubonnet

1/2       oz.        Orange Juice

 

Pour into an ice-filled mixing glass and stir well.  Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, and serve.

 

Tips:  Top off with an orange twist or slice, for added appeal.

 

 

South of Manhattan

Category: Manhattan Variations

 

1 1/2    oz.        Southern Comfort

3/4       oz.        Sweet Vermouth

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Shake or blend with ice, and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.  Garnish with the cherry before serving.

 

 

Stinger

1 1/2    oz.        Brandy

1/2       oz.        White Creme de Menthe

 

Pour into an ice-filled mixing glass and stir to chill.  Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve.

 

Variations:  Simply substitute vodka for brandy to create the Vodka Stinger variation of this classic cocktail.

 

Tips:  Garnish your drink with a sprig of fresh mint, as we have, for extra panache.

 

 

Sunburst

1 1/2    oz.        Vodka

1/4       oz.        Triple Sec

3          oz.        Grapefruit Juice

 

Pour the vodka and grapefruit juice into an ice-filled rocks glass.  Top off with the triple sec, and serve.

 

 

Swampwater

1 1/2    oz         Dark Rum

1/4       oz.        Blue Curacao

1 1/2    oz.        Orange Juice

1/2       oz.        Lemon Juice

 

Shake or blend with ice, and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.

 

Tips:  If you're lookinf for a "conversation cocktail", this may be your ticket:  As disgusting as a Swampwater looks, it tastes darn good!  In a pinch, regular Curacao or Triple Sec can be substituted for the Blue Curacao, though you'll lose the colorful effect.

 

 

Sweet Martini

1 1/2    oz.        Gin

3/4       oz.        Sweet Vermouth

1          dash     Bitters

 

Pour into an ice-filled mixing glass and stir until well chilled.  Strain into a chilled martini glass and serve.
