Harvard

1 1/2    oz.        Brandy

1          oz.        Sweet Vermouth

2          tbsp.     Lemon Juice

2          dashes  Bitters

1          dash     Sugar Syrup

 

Shake the ingredients together with ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail or rocks glass.

 

Trivia:  This is one of a family of 'Harvard' drinks, all of which contain vermouth as a main ingredient.  We wouldn't go so far as to suggest that they'll make you smarter, but they are a nice variation on more common drinks and do taste good!

 

 

Harvey Wallbanger

1 1/2    oz.        Vodka

4          oz.        Orange Juice (preferably

                              fresh-squeezed)

1/2       oz.        Galliano

 

Fill a collins glass with ice, pour in the vodka and orange juice, and stir well.  Float the Galliano on top by pouring it carefully into the glass.  Do not stir again before serving.

 

Trivia:  According to barroom lore, this drink was named after a Southern California surfer who got a little wild after indulging in a drink or two.

 

 

Havana Special

1 1/2    oz.        White Rum

2          oz.        Pineapple Juice

1-2       dashes  Maraschino Liqueur

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Shake or blend together with ice, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with the cherry and serve.

 

Trivia:  Yes, it's another famous rum drink from 1920's Havana!  If you don't have any maraschino liqueur on hand, substitute a splash of juice from the maraschino cherry jar.

 

 

Highball

Category: Highballs

 

1 1/2    oz.        Whiskey

                        Ginger Ale (to fill)

 

Pour the whiskey into an ice-filled highball glass.  Top off with ginger ale, stir, and serve.

 

Variations:  There are dozens of variations of this classic drink.  Basically, mix any liquor (or liqueurs or brandies) in a tall glass with ginger ale or soda water, and you can call it a Highball.

Honolulu Lulu

1 1/2    oz.        Gin

1 1/2    oz.        Benedictine

                        Maraschino Cherry

 

Stir with ice, and strain into a chilled cocktail or martini glass.  Add the cherry and serve.

 

 

Hot Tomtoddy

Category: Hot Drinks

 

3          oz.        Tomato Juice

1          dash     Celery Salt

1          dash     Tabasco Sauce

1/2                   Bay Leaf

1 1/2    oz.        Vodka

 

Heat the first four ingredients together until thoroughly warm.  Pour into a mug, add the vodka, stir, and serve.

 

 

Hurricane

Category: Tropical Drinks

 

1          oz.        Dark Rum

1          oz.        White Rum

3          oz.        Passion Fruit Juice

1/2       oz.        Lime Juice

 

Shake or blend with ice and strain into an ice-filled hurricane glass (or other tall glass).  Serve immediately.
